I want to make it abundantly clear that any health & wellness goal will only be achieved if moving your body and making food choices which support your goals becomes a part of your lifestyle. You certainly don't have to make all the necessary modifications at once; furthermore, small incremental changes lead to higher compliance and therefore, a greater probability of success.
Nix The Quick-fix Mentality
That story was told so you don't get me wrong, I'm not at all suggesting that if you sit by the ocean for 10 minutes you'll lose 10lbs and you'd be crazy to believe me if I did. This certainly isn't that kind of blog...What I am saying, is that being outdoors will not only help you manage stress and by extension, the stress hormone cortisol which has been identified to cause weight gain but will put you in a better frame of mind to take on the health & wellness goals you've set for yourself and any other goals for that matter.
Being Outside Feels So Good
There's something about being in nature...nothing can beat the feeling of being kissed all over your body by the rays of the sun. The various shades of green punctuated by brilliant pinks, reds, yellows - call any color and you can certainly find it (especially if you live in the tropics). Nothing's more refreshing than clean, crisp fresh air - better if it's coming off the ocean. The sound of the waves lapping the shore while simultaneously lulling you into a deep state of relaxation. In nature, I AM at peace.
Nature, time and patience are three great physicians. H.G. Bohn
Spending time in nature helps in "getting my head right". If you're struggling with anything, taking a timeout and spending a bit of time in the great outdoors can only be beneficial. Moreover, if you're trying to whip that body of yours into shape reducing stressors should be high on your to do list and ecotheraphy is certainly the most cost effective way to do so.
Over the past weeks, I've been consciously spending more time outdoors and feel that I've benefitted tremendously. Give me a moment to count some of the ways:
- I AM more relaxed
- My mind is clearer
- I FEEL more connected to source
- I AM more grateful, appreciative and hopeful
- I KNOW that God not only exists but is present in everything
- I AM attacking my health & wellness goals with a vengeance (far cry from last year, read about it here). How do you feel when you spend time in nature?
In the meantime...Give thanks. Eat clean. Sleep deep.
