At times I'm even asked: "How do I get rid of this?" as the individual posing the question clutches onto their "spare tyre" and shakes it frantically. Either way, a very valid question and come to think of it, who wouldn't want to know how to achieve a flat stomach or dare I say - a six pack?
The aesthetic appeal of a flat stomach is usually the driving force behind most peoples' flat stomach quests (including mine). News Flash! Did you know that there is a correlation between fat stored in the midsection of the body and chronic diseases? In my head, this fact took precedence over wanting a flat stomach just because I liked the look.

Are You At Risk?
According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a waist-to-hip ratio greater than 08.0 for women and greater than 0.95 for men MAY put these individuals at risk for a number of diseases. Do you know your ratio?
Get Out That Measuring Tape
Step 1: Measure the smallest part of your waist (____ inches)
Step 2: Measure the largest part of your hips (____ inches)
Step 3: Divide your waist measure (step 1) by your hip measure (Step 2).
For example, my waist measures 26 inches and my hips measure 37 inches; so here goes my calculation: 26/37=0.70. My waist-to-hip ratio of 0.70 is below the measure of 0.80 so I'm just going to continue working out and eating to support my goals.
Feel free to leave a comment about your waist-to-hip ratio. Is it higher, lower or spot on?
